San Francisco/Bayview-Hunters Point

Bay View-Hunter's Point is a district of San Francisco. When the Navy closed the Shipyard, the site of the first dry-dock on the West Coast, it also cut the jobs that came with it and the reason that so many people moved to the area from the South. As jobs left, crime rose, and now this is one of the worst neighborhoods of the city. Although it is turning around slowly and people who live there say it's not as bad as it was 10 years ago. New apartments are being built and MUNI (public transport) service being extended.

Nr. 15 3rd Street Bus from Downtown. 48 Quintara comes from the Mission. The 24 Divisadero. The 29 Sunset.

By train

The MUNI lightrail is currently being extended to go all the way down 3rd Street. Not available yet.

By car

Because the Muni is being extended down 3rd Street, driving in Bayview is a mess. They routinely have all but one lane open and run street sweepers up and down all day causing major delays.

See

  • Try visiting the abandoned Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard if you are feeling adventurous.

  • Candlestick Point park right on the Bay is actually very nice and undervisited. It's very green, actually has functioning benches and BBQ pits (although I've never seen anyone use them), and a small fishing pier

Do

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Pool, 3rd Avenue and Carroll St., Two indoor pools in a nice new facility. Larger one is 75' square. $3 for adults. +1 415 822-2807
  • You are also likely to spot windsurfers who come to this windy spot on the Bay.
  • San Francisco 49ers, Candlestick Park is where the San Francisco 49ers American football team plays.

Eat

  • KFC/Taco Bell, 1610 Jerrold Ave. @ 3rd St. Quick cheap eats. Has a drive thru. Cash or ATM (w/ fee).

There are some BBQ and Ribs places that occasionally get a good review in the Guardian or SFWeekly.

Drink

There are several bars in the area, but you don't really want to go there.

You better find a safe place to sleep. Either in a private residence or in another neighborhood altogether. Note that there is a homeless shelter at a church on 3rd and McKinnon.
