Get in

Balboa Park is located northeast of downtown San Diego, and is accessible from I-5 and I-163.

See

  • The San Diego Zoo.

  • The San Diego Air and Space Museum [1] also burned in the 1978 fire. You may notice the new museum as you fly into San Diego, the circular building is centered around a navy PBY flying boat, and also features exhibits on San Diego native Charles Lindberg.
  • Explore the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. This science museum is filled with interactive exhibits of interest to children, young adults and grown-ups too.
  • Museum of Man natural-history museum.
  • Several art museums.
  • Cultural museums and exhibits.
  • Train museum.

Do

  • See a play at the Old Globe Theatre [2]. The original theater, designed to copy Shakespeare's theatre in London, was built in 1935 for the California Pacific International Exposition. In 1978 the theatre was burned down; the rebuilt theatre opened in 1982. The area hosts three stages including the Old Globe itself, the Cassius Carter theatre-in-the-round, and an outdoor ampitheatre. You will usually have to purchase tickets in advance.
  • Play a round of ""disc golf" at Morley Field.

Buy

Eat

  • Near Balboa Park, in "South Park", is The Big Kitchen [3] at Grape and Fern, so named because the kitchen is bigger than the rest of the restaurant. "Judy The Beauty (on Duty)" is usually there serving up great food (mainly breakfast, but also lunch), with a cheerful (liberal) attitude. Take time to appreciate the bumperstickers and celebrity posters on the walls - Whoopi Goldberg once worked here.

Drink
