Kovalam is famous for its beaches. It is near Thiruvananthapuram city in Kerala in India.

Understand

Kovalam is extremely popular as a beach resort. It was known to Europeans since 1930's, then became very popular among hippies in 70’s

Kovalam has three big adjacent crescent beaches. The southernmost, known as the Lighthouse Beach, is the most popular of the three - it has hotels, restaurants, decent lodges on the seashore itself. It is frequented by outsiders who stay and enjoy Kovalam. The Northenmost crescent is crowded on the weekends, is very popular with the locals, day-travellers, and passing-by tourist buses. Havva Beach, is among one of the beaches in India where nudity is allowed. Tourism department also provides life guard service here.

Kovalam is about 16 km (20 minutes in a taxi) from Trivandrum.

There is a wide range of shops selling good quality souvenirs. Beware of hawkers though. Once you show interest in a certain product, they will pursue you everywhere until you buy it.
